For sheer, weird, exuberant fun, it’s hard to top this crowd-pleasing East Village happening, which may be the world’s most accessible piece of multimedia performance art. The premise is simple: Three deadpan aliens, with comical puzzlement, gamely work their way through the trappings of modern culture. They drum on paint, creating vibrant splashes of color; they consume Twinkies and Cap’n Crunch; they engulf the audience in a sea of toilet paper; one of them catches an astonishing number of marshmallows in his mouth. After nearly 15 years, Blue Man Group is running strong, thanks in part to regular injections of new material. (Its three creators — Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink — still perform regularly, but it’s hard to tell who’s beneath the makeup; the stars disappear into the blue.) Not only is this the best of the long-running shows: By any standard, it’s a royal treat.
